Under the supervision of the WIC Director, this position will oversee WIC Nutrition Services for the local agency. The WIC Nutrition Coordinator will ensure competent staff and quality services and by working towards continuous quality improvement. Performs professional work involved in the planning, creation, maintenance, implementation, and documentation for training and mentoring of employees. Completes administrative duties to assist with fulfillment of the expectations of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) contract. Oversees and ensures training for WIC employees, so they may provide quality service that is participant centered, efficient, effective, follows the State and Federal guidelines, rules and regulations and is integrated with the other departments of the health center.

  • Four (4) year college degree in Dietetics or nutrition related degree. Credentials of a Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RD/RDN)
  • At least 2 years of job-related experience providing high risk counseling and WIC services
  • Must have a valid Arizona Drivers License with current auto insurance
  • Certification to perform cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for the Health Care Professional (CPR) and AED through courses that follow the guidelines from the American Heart Association and Red Cross (cognitive and skills evaluations)
  • Valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety for all specialty behavioral health locations


Demonstrated experience as an Advocate for Health Care or Human Rights

Prefer fluency in a language in addition to English (Spanish preferred)

  • Leads the development of the Local Agency nutrition services plan in coordination with the Breastfeeding and Training Coordinators
  • Develops Local Agency policies, procedures, or guidelines that pertain to nutrition services (e.g., nutrition assessment, nutrition education, food package prescriptions, and job descriptions)
  • Oversees the development of and seeks approval from State agency for any nutrition education materials that are developed or utilized in addition to state provided materials
  • Coordinates direct nutrition services so all participants have access to quality nutrition services in accordance with minimum frequency standards
  • Oversees food and formula prescriptions and coordinates with medical providers as appropriate
  • Collaborates with Training Coordinator to develop Local Agency training schedule including new employee training, ongoing training and mentoring, and nutrition in-services to Local Agency staff who provide nutrition services to participants
  • Provides support and supervision to local WIC agency staff involved with nutrition assessment or delivery of nutrition services
  • Participates in local and state workgroups to improve nutrition and program services
  • Oversees the development and implementation of a quality assurance plan
  • Coordinates nutrition services with other WIC program operations, Local Agencies, and community organizations
  • Provides technical assistance and consultation to other Local Agency staff and other health professionals regarding nutrition services
  • Maintains a record of training provided, monitoring, and observation results of staff competencies in the designated files
  • Implement and adopt state training standards and participate in all mandatory trainings
  • Ensure staff have successfully completed a competency-based training program on performing the duties of a Certified Nutrition Educator (CNE)
  • Coordinates and/or provides nutrition in-service training to other local agency staff that provides nutrition services to participants
  • Observes and conducts chart audits on RDs to review and evaluate the nutrition assessment process, procedures, and staff competencies, then summarizes and reports to managers, supervisors, or other designated staff
  • As needed works at alternate WIC sites
  • Completes other duties as assigned

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time when traveling to various clinic sites. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee may be subject to health hazards (contagious diseases, blood borne pathogens, etc.) when working in the clinic area.
